Examining normal modes as fundamental heat carriers in amorphous solids: The case of amorphous silicon

نویسندگان

چکیده

Normal mode decomposition of atomic vibrations has been used to provide microscopic under-standing thermal transport in amorphous solids for decades. In normal methods, it is naturally assumed that atoms vibrate around their equilibrium positions and individual modes are the fundamental vibrational excitations transporting heat. With abundance predictions from methods experimental measurements now available, we care-fully analyze these calculations silicon, a model solid. We find number discrepancies, suggesting treating as heat carriers may not be accurate solids. Further, our classical ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations silicon demonstrate large degree diffusion, especially at high temperatures, leading conclusion could better described starting perspective liquid rather than crystalline

Excess specific heat in evaporated amorphous silicon.

The specific heat C of e-beam evaporated amorphous silicon (a-Si) thin films prepared at various growth temperatures T(S) and thicknesses t was measured from 2 to 300 K, along with sound velocity v, shear modulus G, density n(Si), and Raman spectra. Increasing T(S) results in a more ordered amorphous network with increases in n(Si), v, G, and a decrease in bond angle disorder. Below 20 K, an ex...

Defects in Amorphous Semiconductors: Amorphous Silicon

Defects in disordered (amorphous) semiconductors are discussed, with an emphasis on hydrogenated amorphous silicon. The general differences between defect phenomena in crystalline and amorphous hosts are described, and the special importance of the electron–phonon coupling is stressed. Detailed calculations for amorphous Si are presented using accurate first principles (density-functional) tech...

The plastic response of magnetoelastic amorphous solids

We address the cross-effects between mechanical strains and magnetic fields on the plastic response of magnetoelastic amorphous solids. It is well known that plasticity in nonmagnetic amorphous solids under external strain γ is dominated by the codimension-1 saddle-node bifurcation in which an eigenvalue of the Hessian matrix vanishes at γP like √ γP − γ. This squareroot singularity determines ...
